Hlongwane in the sources

Hlongwane is a name on our own planning list of Zulu clans. We searched three standard sources and did not find a clan history under it.

What the sources say

What we searched. The full text of Bryant (1929), Soga (1930) and Bonner (1983), under Hlongwane and the variants Hlongwa.

The nearest we found. Bryant has a long entry on the Hlongwa, which we cover on our Hlongwa page; he does not use the spelling Hlongwane, and we do not know whether the families are the same. Bonner’s bibliography names an Albert Hlongwane as the person to whom Msebenzi told the history of Matiwane (published by van Warmelo, 1938), which is a source, not a clan history.

Cautions

This page is still a listing rather than a clan history. We would rather say so than fill it with material we cannot source. We searched the full text of Bryant (1929), Soga (1930) and Bonner (1983) under the spellings given here and under likely variants; absence from these books says nothing about whether the family is old or important, only that these three sources are silent.

Izithakazelo and totem

If you belong to the Hlongwane and can tell us where the family came from, its praises and its totem, we will record it, credited to you.

Know a story that isn't here yet?

A lot of this history still lives only in rondavels and in people's memories. If you know a clan praise, totem or story passed down around the fire, we want to add it, properly verified and credited to you.
