The Vhavenda are a Bantu-speaking people of the far north of Limpopo, around Thohoyandou and the Soutpansberg, with communities across the border in Zimbabwe. Their language, Tshivenda, sits somewhat apart from its Nguni and Sotho-Tswana neighbours and shares features with Shona to the north – reflecting a history tied to the stone-walled kingdoms of Mapungubwe and Great Zimbabwe and to the southward migration of the Singo ruling group.
