Ndlovu clan names and clan praises

Ndlovu means "elephant" in isiZulu and isiNdebele, and it is one of the most widely carried surnames in southern Africa - but, unusually among the clans on this site, it is not one clan. Several unrelated lineages across different peoples carry the name, united only by the elephant as a shared symbol of strength.

Why Ndlovu is not a single clan

Researchers who have traced Ndlovu family histories distinguish several separate groups that all answer to the name, among them:

  • Ndlovu (Gatsheni) – a Nguni lineage.
  • Ndlovu (Mthombeni) – a separate Nguni lineage, with its own distinct praises (see the Ndlovu-Mthombeni clan record on general izithakazelo archives).
  • Ndlovu (Gabula) – of Kalanga origin, in what is now Zimbabwe.
  • Nzou / Zhou – Shona-speaking elephant-totem groups absorbed into the Ndebele (Matabele) kingdom founded by Khumalo‘s Mzilikazi; some of these Ndlovu families migrated with Mzilikazi from South Africa and were originally Nguni, others joined once the kingdom was established in Zimbabwe.

So two people named Ndlovu may have no common ancestor at all – their families simply took, or were given, the same animal name independently. This makes Ndlovu different from most other clan pages on this site, where the surname reliably marks one descent line.

The elephant as a shared symbol

Across the unrelated Ndlovu lineages, the elephant consistently stands for strength, memory, wisdom and leadership – qualities the animal represents in Nguni and Shona thought generally, independent of any one clan’s specific history. Several other peoples in the region also hold elephant-totem groups, including some Zimbabwean Tonga, Tavara, Korekore and Karanga communities, and the Lemba (Remba) – though we have not been able to confirm whether the Tsonga or Venda name an “Ndlovu”-equivalent elephant clan in the same way, and treat that as an open question rather than a confirmed link.

What this means for your own izithakazelo

If your surname is Ndlovu, the single most useful piece of information for finding your specific praises is which other names or places your family associates with the surname – for example “Ndlovu kaMthombeni,” a particular district, or a particular totem variant. Without that, it is not possible to give one set of izithakazelo that applies to “the” Ndlovu clan, because there isn’t one. See our guide on how to trace your clan name for how to recover this from family memory.

Notable people named Ndlovu

The surname is extremely common across South Africa and Zimbabwe, in public life, sport, music and academia, drawn from all of the separate lineages described above.
